Power coming back on for hundreds in East Forest Park

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – About 1,000 utility customers lost power in Springfield’s East Forest Park neighborhood Friday morning, where the traffic lights went out at a major intersection.

Police were directing traffic and temporary stop signs were put up at the intersection of Sumner Avenue, Allen Street, Harkness Avenue, and Abbott Street. The power has since been restored to those lights.

Just east of that intersection on Allen Street, there are multiple wires down, where branches had fallen. Priscilla Ress, spokesperson for Eversource Energy, told 22News that their crews are out making repairs. As of 10:30 A.M., there were about 160 customers without power, down from about 750 customers an hour earlier, and more than 1,000 after the wires came down at about 7:40.

Ress said that there could still be some customers in that area who will not have their power restored until about 2:00 P.M.

In the meantime, Allen Street eastbound from Harkness Avenue is closed for several blocks, drivers hoping to head in that direction are being detoured down Harkness Avenue.
