Police: Man used rosary beads to choke rape victim

He is now held without bail after pleading not guilty Monday

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — Police say a man released from jail two weeks ago used rosary beads to choke one of two women he’s charged with raping within a half hour of each other.

Brockton police tell The Enterprise that 38-year-old Roberto Ruffini picked up a woman he knew Sunday and began to drive around looking for drugs.

Prosecutors say Ruffini threatened to kill the woman unless she complied with him, then forced her to perform a sex act, during which he choked her with the beads.

The woman escaped, but about 30 minutes later, prosecutors say Ruffini forced a prostitute to commit a sex act against her will.

When police caught up with Ruffini, he denied having any problems with either woman.

He was held without bail after pleading not guilty Monday.
