SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI-WWLP) – Six people were taken to the hospital Tuesday morning, following the collapse of a sports facility under construction at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Police and fire departments from several surrounding communities were called to the campus following the incident, at around 8:15 A.M.
Our sister station WPRI-TV reports that the six injured people fell about 30 feet, and were underneath the facility’s steel structure when emergency crews got there. All of them are expected to survive.
Bryant University spokesperson Liz O’Neil said that the facility was an indoor practice center; 120 yards of covered turf field that was to be used for the lacrosse and field hockey teams, as well as club and intramural sports. Construction began in May, and was expected to be completed by January.
