Abandoned home in Springfield accumulating trash

Code enforcement inspectors are out six days a week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Neighbors in a Springfield neighborhood are upset about trash accumulating in the yard of one abandoned home.

A 22News viewer emailed us after making several calls to the city regarding the condition of 53 James Street. She said people continue to drop off garbage, old mattresses, tires, and other scrap materials into the back yard, and now it’s overflowing into the front yard.

She said the home emits a bad small; another neighbor said he’s dealing with more rodents in his yard.

Earlier this year, Springfield Deputy Director of Code Enforcement Dave Cotter told 22News there are currently several hundred vacant homes in Springfield.

Code enforcement inspectors are out six days a week prioritizing which homes need to be secured, and which ones need to be demolished.
