Opening ceremonies held for 9/11 Wiffle Ball Tournament

This year's tournament is honoring Marine Lance Corporal Paul Fagundes of Fall River

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Opening ceremonies Friday night in Westfield for a fun event with a somber purpose.

Friday marked the start of the seventh-annual 9/11 Memorial Wiffle Ball tournament at Fenway Westfield.

The three day tournament honors fallen U.S. military personnel, and half the proceeds go to the Community Christian School, and the other half goes to the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy fund.

Erica Zeiger of the Mass. Soldiers Legacy Fund told 22News, “We provide education grants to the children of Mass. residents who died in Iraq or Afghanistan. We have 77 children that are parts of our fund.”

This year’s tournament is honoring Marine Lance Corporal Paul Fagundes of Fall River. Corporal Fagundes drowned 5 years ago trying to save two fellow Marines during anti-terrorism training in Guantanamo Bay.
