‘Adopt an Island’ Mary statue removed

Only natural materials like plants, flowers, and landscaping stones are allowed

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A once-controversial ‘Adopt an Island’ display in West Springfield was taken down Friday morning.

Back in 2013, Antonio Liquori, owner of Liquori’s Pizza, placed a Virgin Mary statue with flowers on the plot of land he adopted. He was once forced to remove it because people in town complained, but was eventually allowed to put it back up.

West Springfield DPW Director Robert Colson told 22News only natural materials like plants, flowers, and landscaping stones are allowed. He said the Liquoris are a great family who run a great business, and he appreciates the way they and other program participants beautify the town.

22News went to the restaurant for comment, but they’re closed for vacation until Tuesday.
