SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Up until recently, it has been a pretty quiet hurricane season, but there is some action in the tropics right now. We are tracking the movement of Tropical Storm Erika, which continues to move toward the Dominican Republic, and possibly toward Florida as a hurricane this weekend. It has actually been ten years since Florida has been hit by a hurricane.
Historically here in western Massachusetts, this is the time of year we are typically affected by hurricanes and tropical storms, though we do not see them every year. Some local residents are hopeful that we won’t this year, either.
“My feeling is that we may be able to avoid it this year. I haven’t given hurricanes much thought, usually in years past, there’s usually a lot more than this year,” George Torrey of Longmeadow said.
We are getting into the most intense time of year for hurricane activity: the peak of the season runs from mid-August through late October.
