DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Deerfield Police are urging people not to be too trusting because there are many people who could take advantage of that.
Police said a women dropped off a check, which was all a part of scheme. The directions basically said to deposit the check in an account and wire them 90-percent of the money. They then tell you to keep the difference and that they’ll send you the rest of the prize.
After 48-hours, when your bank realizes the account the check was written out of is closed, you’re out of all of the money you wired them.
Louise Leavitt of Greenfield told 22News she knows firsthand because she was almost schemed herself. She said, “They didn’t sound that professional. I was skeptical and I called the Better Business Bureau and they checked it out and said “no, it’s wrong, don’t do it.”
Deerfield Police want you to be vigilant. If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Also, don’t deal with people and companies you sense are not legitimate. And most importantly, don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.
