(NBC News) Survivors and family members of victims in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting testified during a sentencing hearing for gunman James Holmes Monday.
Holmes was convicted of killing 12 people and injuring 70 others. He avoided the death penalty when a jury could not unanimously agree on punishment. As a result Holmes was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The prosecution plans to call about 100 people to testify about how the crimes committed by Holmes have impacted their lives.
The defense will also have the opportunity to call witnesses, including Holmes himself if he so chooses.
