Tractor trailer catches fire on the Mass Pike

Many people reported hearing "pop" noises

PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) – Lanes were closed Monday night on the Massachusetts Turnpike after a tractor trailer caught fire near Exit 8.

Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Jonathan Swift told 22News the tractor was carrying ammunition primers, which is used in firearm ballistics; the primer is a component of pistol, rifle, and shotgun rounds.

Police determined there were no explosives on board; however, many people reported hearing “pop” noises, or the sound of fireworks, as some of ammunition went off, said Sgt. Swift.

The tracker sustained damage and was towed before 11:00 p.m Monday. Sgt. Swift said lanes were closed, but reopened after a short period of time.

State Police said no evacuations were issued after the accident. Palmer Police also said they didn’t call in hazmat and did not issue any evacuations either.
