CHICOPEE Mass. (WWLP) – Universal continues its dominance of the 2015 box-office with the release of Straight Outta Compton, the biopic about rap group N.W.A. Former group member Ice Cube served as one of the producers for the movie, while his son O’Shea Jackson Jr. plays his younger self.
The movie looks to have a similar opening to 8 Mile, which starred rapper Eminem and tapped into his music fan base for support. Compton is estimated to beat 8 Mile for opening day gross by about $5 million. If Compton follows the same weekend pattern as 8 Mile than its weekend number will be about $62 million.
This would be the sixth movie for Universal opening above $60 million on its opening weekend following Jurassic World, Furious 7, Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey, and Pitch Perfect 2. All of those movies have gone on to gross more than $150 million at the box-office.
With Compton dominating the box-office, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. looks to have a disappointing opening further down the charts. In fact, U.N.C.L.E. may not even beat Mission: Impossible in its third week of release. Mission was estimated a scant $10,000 ahead of U.N.C.L.E. on Friday, but it should widen the lead by the end of the weekend. Both movies are action movies based upon old television shows.
Fantastic Four appears to be solidifying itself as one of the worst flops of the year. It fell to fourth place on Friday with a mere $2.4 million added to its miniscule total. It looks to end its total below much maligned comic book adaptations The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Ghost Rider.
