Hot, humid, and dry August

We have not had an official heat wave yet

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Even though we are still in summer, August has been a hot and humid month so far. But is this normal?

Sam Conway, Wilbraham, told 22News, “I mow some lawns on the side and they are all not growing because of the lack of rain or whatever!”

It has been hot, humid, and on top of that dry! Besides from being so dry, this is actually normal for the month of August.

August is typically the second hottest month right behind July where the nights tend to get cooler first!

Most people have picked up on this, especially if you are out and about at night.

Rachel Sandidge, from Westfield agreed, “It’s been pretty hot and stuff, but actually the nights are getting colder right now so it’s been nice.”

Our average high for this time of year is the lower 80’s, but hitting 90 degrees a couple times this month is not out of the question. We have not had an official heat wave yet, even though it certainly has felt like it, but we have hit 90 degrees 3 different times so far this month. We also hit 90 degree a couple different times as well this summer. To some, it is still a surprise.

Such as Conway, “It’s pretty surprising, it usually starts to cool off at this time, but it’s kinda like July weather after that winter, it’s kind of surprising to see the summer so hot!”

And not only hot and humid, but also dry! We are below average in rain totals for this month and even some parts of Massachusetts are now back in the abnormally dry category. We have had some good rain storms but not enough to keep the ground saturated. As we begin to end August, that could change.
