SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) — Construction continues in western Massachusetts this week. Closures will impact drivers starting Monday morning.
A section of West Columbus Avenue will be closed on Monday, which means your morning commute could be affected. This roadwork is part of the ongoing I-91 construction project. Crews will be widening the roadway during that time. By widening the road, MassDOT says West Columbus Ave. will be able to accommodate more traffic once the Viaduct rehabilitation project is in full swing.
The portion of West Columbus Avenue, between Hampden Street and Boland Way, near the Memorial Bridge will be closed. Drivers who need to get to that section of West Columbus Ave. can take Hampden Street to East Columbus Avenue, then turn right onto Boland Way. From there, you’ll be able to turn left onto West Columbus Avenue near the Basketball Hall of Fame.
If you usually park at the North Parking Garage in downtown Springfield, the entrances will stay open during the closure.
This closure will also impact drivers who usually get off Exit 7 on I-91 Southbound in Springfield.
MassDOT is warning drivers to expect delays during Monday’s construction. They’re also urging drivers to reduce their speed in the area.
