SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Roberto Manuel O’Leary-Moreno endured teasing from his classmates over his long hair, but the ten year-old kept growing it; knowing that it would be put to good use.
On Friday, O’Leary-Moreno went to Duke’s Barber Shop in Springfield, where he had his hair cut, in order to be donated to the charity Locks of Love. The organization collects hair to make wigs for children who have lost their hair as a result of various medical conditions.
“I used to be very shy, easy to abuse- but when my mom told me just do not care, actually to have fun when they abused me- I didn’t care,” O’Leary-Moreno said.
“I love how it came out,” his mother, Yamira Moreno-Escobar said. ” He let it grow to give the kids with cancer. He has so much sympathy for other kids.”
To get to this point, O’Leary-Moreno had been growing his hair for the last year and a half. He told 22News that now with shorter hair, he will start growing it again, so he can be back donating to Locks of Love in another 18 months.
