CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Lifeguards and EMTs attempted to save the life of swimmer at a state-run pool in Chicopee, but he has died.
Chicopee Police Officer Mike Wilk told 22News that a lifeguard pulled a 45 year-old man from the water at the DCR pool at Sarah Jane Sherman Park on Meadow Street at around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon. Lifeguards at the pool performed CPR on the man, and began resuscitation efforts.
12 year old Rayvon Mentre told 22News he alerted the lifeguard when he saw that a swimmer was in trouble under water. He said, “I had goggles on and I looked under the water and I saw the guy in the water not moving at all.” (What did you do then?) “I told the lifeguard; he jumped in the water.”
Police and EMTs were called, and the man was loaded onto an ambulance, and taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he died.
The man’s identity is not being released at this time. Chicopee Police and Massachusetts State Police are looking into his death.
