(NBC News) The FBI is investigating the private email system Hillary Clinton used when she was Secretary of State.
There’s no allegation of wrongdoing, but it’s still bad news for the Democratic presidential candidate who’s already having a down week in the polls.
“It is primarily focused right now – at this point – on the security of information in emails that might be classified,” says Washington Post reporter Carol Leonnig.
Clinton’s campaign says she “did not send nor receive any emails that were marked classified at the time”, but an inspector general found perhaps hundreds of sensitive emails made their way through the private server in the Clinton’s New York home, some of it kept by her private attorney on a thumb drive.
The FBI is asking whether the communications were properly safeguarded.
