Bill to make Massachusetts a sanctuary state filed

BOSTON (WWLP) – It’s a heated issue both on Capitol Hill and on Beacon Hill. Some state lawmakers want to make Massachusetts a sanctuary state. A sanctuary city or state consciously refuses to enforce federal immigration laws.

Boston Democrat Byron Rushing filed a bill to ban public state agencies from sharing information on undocumented immigrants. It would also prevent state agencies from denying benefits based on someone’s immigration status.

Senate President Stan Rosenberg told 22 News that he believes the federal government should solve this problem, not individual states. “People see it as a federal issue. They don’t think that the state ought to be making separate policies based upon where people come from,” the Amherst Democrat said.

The bill is currently in committee. Rosenberg doesn’t expect this bill to move forward this session.
