BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – An unidentified patient who was admitted to UAB hospital on Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama, has tested negative for Ebola.
The patient was brought to the hospital after experiencing “Ebola-like symptoms.” The patient had been under monitoring after recently visiting an African country with active Ebola cases, according to Dr. Ed Kahn, Jefferson County Medical Director of Disease Control.
According to Birmingham Fire’s Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis, doctors believe the patient has Malaria.
The six firefighters that responded to the call were isolated and underwent decontamination. Two family members of the patient also were quarantined in their house. The firefighters and relatives were cleared through medical testing.
The patient’s identity is being withheld for now. Kahn said the patient was at low-risk for Ebola as they had no contact with any cases of Ebola.
