WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A West Springfield woman is dead after she was struck by a pickup truck Friday afternoon.
According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, the 60-year-old woman was trying to run across State Street, near the intersection of Wilbraham Road and Catherine Street, when she was struck by a pickup truck being driven by a 63-year-old man from Chicopee.
Sgt. Delaney said the victim was then rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where she later died.
22News discovered deadly pedestrian accidents could be more common than you think. According to AAA, an average of 445 people are sent to the emergency room after getting hit by cars. In 2013, 4,735 pedestrians were killed across the U.S.; deaths safety experts say might have been avoided if they were using a crosswalk or wearing reflective clothing at the time.
Police say Friday’s deadly crash is still being investigated. The victim’s name won’t be released until the family has all been notified.
So far, no charges have been filed against the driver, who police say, wasn’t speeding at the time.
