Chicopee has ambitious plans for new community garden

Chicopee has become the latest Western Massachusetts community to establish a community garden.

CHICOPEE Mass. (WWLP) – Chicopee has become the latest western Massachusetts community to establish a community garden.

As of 8 o’clock Saturday morning, residents started growing their own fruits and vegetables on their own plot of earth in Lincoln Grove Park in Chicopee Falls. The community garden committee has ambitious plans for their food growing center.

Melanie Wilk told 22News, “Our goal anyway is to provide a place for low income families of Chicopee to be able to grow their own fruits and vegetables. So people who don’t have space in their backyard, people who don’t have access to fruits and vegetables and who don’t live near a grocery store, this is kind of aiming for them.”

The Chicopee community garden organizers plan to turn over the entire first year’s crop to the neediest families in the city.
