The key to back-to-school shopping: Start early

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — In less than a month, some Central Ohio schools will open their doors for the new school year.

That means it’s time to stock up on brand new school supplies.

Even though there are plenty of deals online, many shoppers still prefer to hit the stores in-person.

Retailers suggest you shop early so that you don’t miss out on some of the more popular specialty items.

Some of the big retailers say they will run sales on and off until school starts. But, some of the best deals can be found right now, before students head back to class.

Kristin Orban, a mother of a first grader, was able to get the Ninjago backpack her son wanted, because she started shopping extra early.

“I think everyone’s just kind of slowly getting into it and just I think if you take your time it doesn’t hurt as quite as bad,” said Orban.

Kristin says, for her, starting early was key.

“There were a lot of people. For some of the sales, I went a couple of days after the sale started and a lot of what I was in there for was already gone.”

Many of the big back-to-school ads came out last Sunday, and featuring some stores’ best deals.

For example, Target is offering “buy one, get one 50% off,” on many of the popular back-to-school items.

Frank Glover, a manager at the Graceland Target, says the earlier shoppers start, the better the selection.

“Crayons, Crayola crayons, Crayola markers always have a fantastic price this time of the year. We get a tremendous amount in but we’ll sell thousands of just the crayons and the markers,” said Glover.

Glover said calculators are another hot seller.
