SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – They’re not all that common and they’re usually not all that strong but an earthquake did occur Wednesday in New England. 22News is working for you with whether you may want to look into getting earthquake insurance.
The earthquake occurred early in the morning near Providence, Rhode Island. The 2.3 magnitude earthquake occurred Wednesday morning at 3:43 and woke quite a few people up in the Providence, Rhode Island area. No damage or injuries were reported.
Earthquakes do occur in New England and we’ve had a few of them here in western Massachusetts but there’ll usually very small.
While the risk of damage to your home may be pretty low you can still get earthquake insurance.
Bill Trudeau of the Insurance Center of New England told 22News, “It may add, on a $300,000 valued home, you might be talking about a $70 additional premium to cover it for earthquake. There’s usually 5 percent for the home deductible, so in my example the deductible would be $15,000, that’s a big deductible.”
Trudeau says the earthquake insurance will cover damage to your home but it doesn’t cover damage to the land around it like your driveway.
Earlier this year there were several small earthquakes reported in eastern Connecticut.
