More reports for lasers pointed at planes

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Pilots keep reporting that they’re distracted by green lasers as they fly over New York City. The latest incident happened Tuesday night as a United Airlines plane was landing at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey.

Just last week, 12 different planes were lit up by these lasers. Last year, there were nearly 3,900 reports of planes being targeted.

Pilots are focusing instead on looking away from the laser, and not at the flight plan or landing strip. And as always, passengers are at the mercy of the pilots.

“Overall I still think that it’s the kind of thing that you can’t really worry about too much,” Luther Turmell of Cheshire told 22News. “I mean you could just as easily be killed driving a car on the highway. So I’m a little concerned but not overly concerned, I guess I would say.”

It’s a federal crime to point a laser at a plane, but it’s difficult to catch those responsible. The penalty for targeting a plane is fine of up to $250,000 and up to 20 years in prison
