NANTUCKET, Mass. (WWLP) – The Coast Guard is searching for a 64 year-old man who did not resurface while diving near the wreck of the cruise ship Andrea Doria. The Coast Guard was alerted about the missing man at around 1:00 Tuesday afternoon.
By air and by sea, the Coast Guard has searched an area of more than 159 square nautical miles, but has so far been unsuccessful.
The man’s name has not yet been released.
The wreck of the Andrea Doria is located at about 60 nautical miles southeast of Nantucket, and rests about 240 feet below the surface of the ocean. It has been a popular place attraction for divers, but one that has also been quite dangerous. The Coast Guard reports that seven people have died and four others have been hurt diving in the area since 2005.
An Italian Cruise ship, the Andrea Doria capsized and sank in 1956 after being struck by the Swedish ship Stockholm. Fifty two people were killed, nearly all of them from the force of the impact.
