Bicyclist killed in Deerfield accident

DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A 67 year-old man has died after his bicycle was struck by a car in Deerfield Tuesday afternoon.

Mary Carey, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, told 22News that around 4:00 P.M., a car traveling north on Routes 5 & 10 drifted into the breakdown lane, and hit the man’s bicycle from behind.

The bicyclist was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield by ambulance, but he died during the early morning hours Wednesday.

Carey says that the driver of the car had cooperated with police, and no charges have been filed at this time.

Deerfield police, state police, and the Northwestern District Attorney’s office are still looking into the cause of the accident. The victim’s name is not being released at this time.
