“Yes means Yes” adopted in a second state

One in five college women are sexually assaulted every year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – When it comes to sex, we’ve all heard the phrase “No means No”. Well now, there’s a new phrase: “Yes means Yes”.

New York is the second state to implement the new law on college campuses. There had been debate that “no means no” only protected those who were capable of saying no to sex.

But what about those students who may have been too intoxicated to say no?

That’s why the new law requires someone to say ‘yes’, in order for the sex to be considered consensual.

Ivy McDonald of Springfield told 22News, “If the person has to say yes, then you can’t be confused on whether the person said yes or no, or what they meant.”

New York’s new law also provides more funding for police and campus investigations.

It’s estimated one in five college women are sexually assaulted every year.
