SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For the very first time, college debt has surpassed our credit card debt.
The non-profit American Student Assistance brought its mobile financial counseling van to Springfield on Friday. They’re helping students avoid long term college debt.
“God forbid a borrower becomes disabled, passes away, a bank would still go after the private loan…with the federal loan they’d get discharged. There’s also different payment programs, one that I’m in with my own federal student loan,” says Matt Lecesse, a student financial adviser with SALT.
According to the planning and financial aid counselors, lack of planning can have a devastating lifetime effect on a debt ridden student. Michael Rogevin goes on to tell 22News, “I met a student who had been going through various programs, and he didn’t even have an associate’s degree yet and he already owned over one hundred thousand dollars. It’s just astronomical.”
SALT advisers speak various languages, so there’s no language barriers. Students needing financial assistance are encouraged to make an appointment and get information.
The student assistance van returns to the Springfield YMCA on July 24th.
