Several weekend road closures and detours scheduled

22News is working for you with the details of where drivers will face detours

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) — Road work, detour signs and delays are all expected on and around the Memorial Bridge over the upcoming weekend.

The MassDOT told 22News improvement work to parts of the Memorial Avenue Rotary requires a scheduled closing of the Memorial Bridge. That closure will be for traffic in both directions and will last three and a half days consecutive days, starting July 10th.

“It’s kind of difficult when you are traveling there’s a lot of traffic there. It would be nice if it was already fixed, it would be nice if you didn’t have to wait in traffic,” Elman Orujeb, a Longmeadow resident, who told 22News he frequently uses the Memorial Bridge on the weekends.

While some drivers are frustrated with the ongoing repair work others, like Chuck Degray of Agawam, said they have their detours all mapped out.

“Oh Sure I know the area well so I won’t even attempt to come up this way. That’s it. I’ll go through Agawam, over the railroad tracks up that way,” Degray said.

When the bridge closes at 10 o’clock Friday night, so will Route 5 North in West Springfield between the South and North end bridges.

The MassDOT told 22News, also starting this weekend is the preparation work for the long awaited permanent repairs to the elevated portion of I-91.

That work will go on during the overnight hours starting Sunday July 12th, weather permitting. It will also overlap with the Memorial Bridge and Rt. 5 North closures which are scheduled to last through Tuesday at 5 A.M.
