Sunburn Art, new but dangerous trend

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – There’s a hot new fashion trend this summer that could potentially be deadly. Sunburn Art is a new trend among teens and young adults and it’s a popular hashtag on social media.

You lay a pattern on your skin and go sit out in the sun. After a few hours, the stencil is taken off and the design is burned into your skin. Doctors warned 22News about the dangers of prolonged sun exposure.

“Sun stencils sound potentially dangerous if the goal is to burn around them. Severe sunburns are what is associated with the development of melanoma at an older age. In general I would just recommend wearing sunscreen and avoiding sunburns and actually wearing clothing is the best. It’s better than sunscreen,” said Sean Mullally, Medical Director, Cooley Dickinson Cancer Program.

Dr. Mullally told 22News people should be wearing sunscreen daily, especially on their face. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the sun can make your skin age faster.

The effect on your skin is cumulative, five or more sunburns when you are a kid can increase your risk for skin cancer by 80%.  It’s best to use a sunscreen with at least SPF-30 protection.
