HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Many job openings exist here in Western Massachusetts, but some companies are reluctant to hire someone who has been out of work for a long time.
As many as 15 to 20 percent of people looking for jobs in the Pioneer Valley are classified as the long term unemployed. David Gadairs is Executive Director of the Job training agency Careerpoint, he told 22News, he understands why many companies think this way.
“Their job is to do what’s best for their bottom line. so they immediately get a red flag about people who’ve been out of work for a long time. That may not be fair, It’s there and I understand this” said Gadaire.
Gadaire also said it’s his job to try to change that thinking and to train the long term jobless to fit in with the companies plans.
