Health advocates hope for 21+ age limit to buy cigarettes to go statewide

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Franklin County town of Greenfield is now in it’s second week of a cigarette sales ban to anyone under 21.

The Greenfield Board of Health advocates having the 21 age limit go statewide. Right now, fewer than 10 percent of the cities and towns have adopted the stricter rules. Stores selling cigarettes are fearful they’d lose business, if the ban went statewide.

Manager James Patel of the Corner store in Chicopee told 22News, his cigarette sales would decline by 40 to sixty percent, “I see these young kids coming here, they just turned 18, they buy cigarettes. So now if they have to wait another 3 years, that’ll definitely hurt business.”

As of now, Hawaii is the only state that prohibits cigarette sales to smokers under 21.
