American Red Cross in need of blood donations

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News and the American Red Cross are asking for your help this week in giving the gift of life.

People are in vacation mode in the weeks surrounding the 4th of July. That means they’re away, or busy with family and friends, and they’re not donating blood. But the need for blood increases in the summer too.

That combination means the Red Cross is always looking for blood donors. That’s why 22News is collaborating with WMAS, the Red Cross, Big E, and Six Flags New England in hosting a blood drive at the Better Living Center on the Big E grounds Thursday, July 8th from Noon to 7pm. Most people are eligible to donate.

“As long as the donor’s at least 110 pounds, generally good health, most medications are actually okay. High blood pressure meds are okay, high cholesterol, diabetes, all okay. We’re just encouraging them to come out” said Ana Parelli, Red Cross District Manager of Donor Recruitment.

She said it takes about 45 minutes from start to finish. Aside from feeling like you really helped save someone’s life, you’ll also get a complimentary one-day pass to Six Flags New England.
