One dead after crash involving Chicopee Police cruiser

The victim is a 37 year-old-man. The officer suffered head injuries.

CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) — A driver was killed and a Chicopee Police officer was seriously injured in a head-on collision involving a police cruiser early Saturday morning.

Chicopee Police were called to Front Street for a report of a head-on collision between a police cruiser and an SUV just after 2:00 a.m. Saturday.

Both drivers were rushed to Baystate Medical Center where the driver of the other vehicle died later Saturday morning. Chicopee Police later identified the drivers as Officer Joseph Pieczarka and Richard Chapin, 37, from Chicopee.

The crash impact pushed the cruiser into the parking lot of City Hall.

Chicopee Police officer Mike Wilk told 22News Officer Pieczarka was released from the hospital Saturday and is recovering from numerous lacerations as well as a head injury. Preliminary reports show that Mr Chapin crossed over and into Officer Pieczarka’s lane, and struck him head on.

Front Street was closed while the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) investigated the accident.
