(NBC NEWS) – Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that erupted overnight at an African American church in the small town of Greeleyville, South Carolina. It’s the eighth fire at a predominantly black church in the last two weeks.
According to the Associated Press, early indications are the fire at the Mount Zion A.M.E. Church in Greeleyville was not intentionally set. “We don’t want to stand in judgment, but let law enforcement do what it does best,” South Carolina State Senator Ronnie Sabb said during a brief press conference outside the charred remains of the church Wednesday morning.
Following a rash of fires at predominantly black churches in the Southeast in the past two weeks, people are on edge.
Officials say at least two of the fires have already been declared arson. In the wake of the Charleston church shooting, and South Carolina Confederate flag controversy, the fires have further fueled the national discussion about race relations.
