NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A firefighter with 28 years of experience has been chosen as the new chief of the Northampton Fire Department. Mayor David Narkewicz appointed Assistant Fire Chief Duane Nichols as the city’s new chief on Wednesday.
If his nomination is approved by the Northampton City Council, Nichols will replace retiring Chief Brian Duggan. Nichols joined the Northampton Fire Department back in 1987, and rose through the ranks, becoming a captain, training officer, and deputy chief of fire prevention before becoming assistant chief in 2007. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Greenfield Community College.
The selection of Nichols as the city’s new fire chief comes just days after the City Council approved Narkewicz’s choice of Jody Kasper as Northampton’s new police chief.
