Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield ordains 8 deacons

The first permanent deacons in Springfield were ordained in 1983.

SPRINGFIELD Mass. (WWLP) – Bishop Mitchell Rozanski of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield ordained eight men as permanent deacons on Saturday.

The ceremony was held in St. Michael’s Cathedral. More than 600 people attended.

In the Catholic Church, permanent deacons are ordained ministers. They assist the priest during Mass and serve the spiritual needs of parishioners. Deacons can officiate at baptisms and marriages.
