Men attacked by beaver in river

Neither suffered critical injuries.

BEND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Standing on the shores of the Deschutes River, a deputy could hear a man screaming after being attacked by a beaver.

According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, the 911 call came in at 6:51 p.m. Thursday.

Deputies said Clayton Mitchell, 23, of Bend, Ore. and his friend John Bailey, 31, of Redmond, Ore. had been attacked by a beaver. The beaver, deputies said, was likely protecting its dam.

The two men were exploring the Deschutes River and had entered the water upriver from Lava Island Falls. They somehow climbed onto the beaver’s dam, which is when the attack occurred, deputies said.

Deputies said Bailey was seen in the water trapped within some submerged logs, deputies said. When first responders got on scene, Mitchell was already out of the water. A short time later, Bailey was seen climbing out of the river.

Both were transported to St. Charles Medical Center by ambulance to be checked out. Neither suffered critical injuries.
