WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)– For the second time this month, upgrades to the Memorial Avenue Rotary will force drivers to make detours around Route 5 and the Memorial Bridge.
Starting Friday night at 10 P.M., the Memorial Bridge will be closed in both directions. The closure is scheduled to last through Tuesday at 5 A.M. Route 5 north will also be closed during this time period between the North End and South End Bridges.
Drivers on the Springfield side of the bridge will need to get around by using I-91. On the West Springfield side heading north, you will need to use Rt. 57, to Rt. 75 in Agawam, and then over the bridge to Rt. 147 (Memorial Avenue) to Main Street to get around.
Mike Verseckes, spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, told 22News that during the weekend work, the contractor will be removing entire parts of the elevated section of the rotary, which runs over Rt. 5, and will be putting in full replacement pieces.
He also said the plan is to have most of the heavy construction activities, like this weekend’s, done well ahead of the Big E to avoid added traffic problems.
Verseckes told 22News this entire project is costing roughly $11 million, and is funded entirely by state tax dollars.
He said the project is running on schedule and that it is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
They expect to have this entire project complete by the end of this year.
