Ready to do-si-do: Square dancers in Springfield for big convention

Event expected to bring-in about $2M for local economy

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For the next four days, Springfield will be the mecca for square dance enthusiasts from all over the world. The first of the 4,000 square dancers attending their 64th annual convention registered Wednesday at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield.

Lennie and Connie Houle of Westfield have been trying to attract their fellow square dancers to western Massachusetts for many years.

“We had to incorporate all the facilities at the Sheraton, the Marriot, even into Tower Square- we took two stores, moved them out and put in dance floors,” Lennie Houle said.

During their four days on the dance floor, conventioneers are expected to generate $2 million into the Pioneer Valley economy. Some of the square dancers are coming to the area from as far away as Japan.
