TARPON SPRINGS, FL (WFLA) – Tarpon Springs Police say they discovered a cache of weapons inside the home of the man they think is responsible for Monday’s backyard explosion.
William Metz, 85, is now charged with 15 felony counts for being a felon in possession of various weapons including 9 counts of possession of a firearm and three counts of possession of a destructive device.
Metz’s criminal record dates back to a 1947 second-degree robbery conviction in New York, according to his arrest affidavit. He was also charged with felony assault and an escaped prisoner felony charge in 1957.
Police started eying Metz early Monday morning after a blast shattered windows and sent shrapnel flying into his neighbor’s wall. The family of three who lives there, including a 2 year-old girl, was not injured.
Tarpon Spring Police obtained a search warrant for Metz’s home Monday afternoon. They discovered several weapons and explosive devices inside, including grenades, a machine gun, and shotgun, according to the affidavit. More than a dozen surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution Monday night.
Tarpon Springs Police plan to hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to update the case. Check back with WFLA.com later today for updates.
