SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Going under the highway through manhole covers, state police say thieves stole about 13,000 feet of copper wire that powers the light poles along Interstate 91 and Interstate 391. That large amount of wire has an estimated value of about $50,000.

Two arrests in the case were made earlier this week. According to a news release from State Police Media Relations, Luis Colon, 42, of Springfield, and Alejandro B. Rodriguez, 19, of Chicopee were arrested Monday, following an investigation involving troopers and Springfield police.

State police say they were contacted about the thefts on June 15 by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Investigators eventually received information that Colon and Rodriguez had the stolen wire, and warrants were issued for their arrests.

Both men are charged with larceny over $250 by false pretense, receiving stolen property over $250, and conspiracy. Colon faces an additional charge of attempt to commit a crime. They were arraigned Monday in Springfield District Court.
