CHICOPEE Mass. (WWLP) – Now that summer is officially here, it’s time to hit the open road and take a vacation. But the increase in traffic presents an extra danger, especially for motorcycles.

In West Hartford Connecticut, a 12 year old boy and two others were injured this weekend in two separate motorcycle accidents.

Motorcycle safety begins with the proper equipment.

  • A leather jacket, this can reduce your risk of road rash.
  • A good pair of gloves can protect your hands.
  • And remember, a helmet can save your life.

Motorcycle drivers told 22News if they think summer driving is more dangerous.

Bill Bell of Chicopee told 22News, “With school being out, you’re going to have more summertime riding. More kids are out on the streets, especially at night time, their going out to party. They’re back home now, so they’re going to go out and have a good time. That could pose as a danger to motorcyclist too.”

Commuter vehicles should check twice before pulling out of side streets.

In 2013, about 4,500 motorcycle riders were killed. Massachusetts is one of only 19 states that has a law requiring all motorcycle riders to wear a helmet.
