WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A kitchen ceiling fire closed Carabba’s Italian Grill in West Springfield Sunday, and the restaurant will remain closed.

West Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Mike Culver told 22News the smoke and water damage is too extensive for the restaurant to open any time soon.

Smoke began pouring out from the rooftop less than an hour before the Riverdale Street restaurant was to open for Father’s Day customers.

Carrabba’s is located at 955 Riverdale Street near the Riverdale shops.

West Springfield fire chief Bill Flaherty pinpointed for 22News just where the Carrabba’s fire began. “They found fire coming from the roof area. Upon further investigation there was no fire from inside. The fire was between the metal roof and the rubber roofing.”

While the firefighters did their work, West Springfield Police directed traffic to avoid congestion in this heavily traveled area of Route 5.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill is part of a national chain of more than 200 Italian restaurants.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
