AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – UMass Amherst is playing a critical role in the effort to maintain wildlife habitat and minimize flood damage. They are cataloging culverts.
Culverts are underground drainage pipes that help to get rid of storm water.
The cataloging program will help states keep track of which culverts are designed to modern standards and which must be upgraded or replaced.
Many culverts failed during Tropical Storm Irene and Superstorm Sandy.
The database will include information on how well fish and other wildlife would be able to pass and if they are big enough to withstand floods.
