BOSTON (AP) — Authorities have identified a man shot by a state trooper Friday on a highway footbridge near a Boston riverside park.

The Suffolk district attorney’s office, which is investigating, said 45-year-old Santos Laboy of Somerville was sought on outstanding warrants.

State police Col. Timothy Alben said Boston University officers first approached Laboy because he matched the suspect’s description. Alben said Laboy pulled a knife and ran through the Esplanade along the Charles River and onto Storrow Drive.

He said a trooper working nearby confronted Laboy on a footbridge over Storrow Drive. He said the trooper shot Laboy after he refused to drop the knife and made threatening gestures. Several people witnessed the shooting.

Alben said Laboy had a long criminal record, and the new charges included harassment and annoying a person of the opposite sex.
