BOSTON (AP) — Officials of Massport and China’s Hainan Airlines are celebrating Boston’s first nonstop flight between Shanghai and Logan International Airport.
The flight that arrived Saturday is the first of a three-day-a-week service on Boeing 787 aircraft between Boston and the Chinese city. Hainan already operates nonstop flights between Boston and Beijing, which became daily in May. The Shanghai flights are scheduled on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Boston had been the largest U.S.-to-Shanghai travel market without nonstop service, and Shanghai had been Boston’s largest unserved international market. Massport said more than 76,000 passengers traveled between the two cities last year.
The flight time is about 15 hours westbound and 14 hours eastbound.
Gov. Charlie Baker said in a statement the added service helps the state compete for international business and adds travel options that stimulate economic growth.
