DANNEMORA, N.Y. (MEDIA GENERAL) – Details continue to leak out of Joyce Mitchell’s alleged relationship with Richard Matt, one of two convicted murderers Mitchell allegedly helped escape the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York nearly two weeks ago.

Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie told CNN that Matt painted a portrait of Mitchell’s children and gave the painting to Mitchell, who gifted it to her husband, Lyle, as an anniversary present in April. In exchange, Mitchell gave Matt a pair of speed bag gloves.

Authorities have said Mitchell had a sexual relationship with Matt and now are reopening a 2013 investigation into an alleged past relationship with David Sweat, the other escapee. Sources close to the investigation said Mitchell and Matt’s sexual encounters took place in the tailor shop. Following the 2013 investigation, Sweat was moved out of the tailor shop to limit his contact with Mitchell.

Lyle Mitchell also worked in the prison’s tailoring block. He claims he was unaware of the prisoners’ escape plan and wasn’t aware of his wife’s alleged relationships with Matt and Sweat.

According to Wylie, Joyce Mitchell warned her husband that Matt and Sweat intended to kill him.
“She advised him after the escape of what happened, including the possible murder plot,” Wylie told CNN.

Investigators have subpoenaed Joyce Mitchell’s cell phone records as they continue to dive into Mitchell’s relationships with the two escapees. According to Mitchell’s attorney, investigators could find as much as 20 hours of conversations between the convicts. Wylie also said Mitchell spoke with Matt’s daughter at least once.
