NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – An 18 year-old in Canada left his cell phone in a taxi and had it stolen. He used cell phone tracking technology to locate his phone and then confronted to men who took it. They shot and killed him.
Police say this is the wrong thing to do. If your cell phone is lost and stolen, and you’re able to locate it with the ‘Find my Phone’ app, don’t take matters into your own hands. It’s better to call the police, and let them handle it.
Christie George of Northampton told 22News, “I would probably talk with friend and family first and then contact the police, especially if it was a situation where I knew that it was stolen for sure as opposed to if maybe I had thought I had lost it. I would contact the police. Especially learning this information, that’s a pretty scary thought.”
If you ever sell your old phone to a stranger, do it in a safe place. The Northampton Police Department has parking spaces with surveillance cameras that can be used to safely monitor a Craigslist transaction with a stranger.
As for the 18 year old, police in Toronto are still trying to find his killers.
