SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Accidental deaths are up in the United States, and the leading cause may surprise many people: it’s drug overdoses.
Drug overdose deaths have doubled in the last 14 years. Now, more people die of overdose that from car accidents.
Trust for America’s Health found drug overdoses killed 44,000 people in 2013. More than half of these deaths were from prescription drugs.
One man told 22News there should be more programs across the country to regulate and take back prescription drugs.
“They should keep track of how many someone has so when they go for their refills. When they go in for their last check-up to see if they’re done, they should collect the drugs back from them so people don’t keep them and abuse them,” said Temi Bailey of West Springfield.
More than 2 million Americans abuse prescription drugs, with heroin use on the rise.
