EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP)- A new study ranks the state’s safest communities.
Safety is a priority for many people trying to find a place to live, and for people 22News spoke with, that can only be found in the right community.
The financial website “Valuepenguin” ranked Massachusetts’ safest places to live by looking at 2013 FBI crime data. Not every community participated. Towns with fewer than 3,000 people were excluded.
The study looked at 237 cities and towns across the Commonwealth ranking them based on property and violent crime. Southampton was ranked number 29, Longmeadow 65, and in Easthampton they were ranked 81. But they were the top three safest communities in western Massachusetts.
Haley Brbovnic said she thinks the largest contribution is the close knit community. “Nothing really goes on in Southampton I guess. People are really nice there, it’s quiet,” Brbovnic said.
The data was standardized to reflect crimes per 1,000 people in each community, with violent crime being weighted 80% and property crime at 20%.
Roger Taylor, moved to Easthampton four years ago, “It’s a really special community. It’s small enough that you tend to know one another but there’s also sort of a cosmopolitan flare that’s up here too, which I really like.”
Right at the bottom of the list, Holyoke and Springfield at 236 and 237.
